Trinity Health Physician J. Michael Kramer Named to
Modern Healthcare’s “Up and Comers” List

NOVI, Mich. (Sept. 14, 2009) - Trinity Health announced today that J. Michael Kramer, MD, Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer, as been named to the 2009 “Up and Comers” list by Modern Healthcare magazine for his work to make electronic health records an effective tool for clinicians in the delivery of safe, high quality care.

The Up and Comer list annually recognizes rising young leaders aged 40 and under who are making a difference in health care. Kramer was one of 12 executives selected from among 139 nominations. The honorees appear in the Sept. 14 issue of Modern Healthcare.

A physician with a master’s degree in business information and formal clinical informatics training, Kramer oversees the development of clinical information systems that assist clinicians in the delivery of high quality patient care. He represents the needs and requirements of the clinical community in promoting the use of information technology.

Kramer is a key leader in Trinity Health’s initaitive to implement electronic health records (EHR) with computerized provider order entry (CPOE). Trinity Health has equipped 22 hospitals with EHR and CPOE, which has an exceptional CPOE usage rate of 74 percent among mostly affiliated physicians. He provides clinical quality oversight of a data repository containing more than seven million patient records. Clinicians average of 293,000 chart openings and process 587,000 orders daily.

“Mike is an extremely high caliber leader who possesses both the technological and business intelligence necessary to implement information systems in hospital settings, and the personal experience of a practicing physician invovled in direct patient care,” said Terrence O’Rourke, chief clinical officer of Trinity Health. “He blends both highly specialized skill sets to facilitate the development of clinical information systems that best meet the needs and preferences of our physicians, nurses and clinicians.”

Prior to joining Trinity Health in 2005, Kramer spent 10 years at the University of Michigan Health System as both a practicing physician and physician lead for clinical systems integration. He earned his medical degree from Case Western University. At University of Michigan he completed residency and board certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. He earned an MBA at the University of Michigan and a medical informatics fellowship.

Over the 20-plus years of Up and Comers classes, past Trinity Health winners have included Kedrick Adkins, President, Integrated Services; Preston Gee, Senior Vice President, Strategy, Marketing and Communications; Lou Fierens, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Management and Capital Projects, and Aissya Williamson, Executive Director, Mercy Primary Care Center.
