Knee Pain Specialists at Trinity Health Michigan: Why Choose Us?

Trinity Health Michigan offers more of the chronic knee pain therapies you need close to home. Even if standard therapies have not been successful, we can help you. Many patients achieve lasting knee pain relief with nonsurgical treatments. When surgery is necessary, we use minimally invasive techniques that get you back on your feet in less time.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Our commitment to high-quality knee replacement surgery has earned national recognition for many of our hospitals. This procedure replaces a worn-out knee joint with an artificial one. Our knee specialists hold themselves to the highest standard so that you can safely be up and moving shortly after surgery. Find out more about joint replacement surgery.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery We Perform

Trinity Health Michigan offers two types of knee replacement surgery:

  • Partial: This option is for people with tissue damage affecting only one of the three compartments within the knee joint. We replace the damaged tissue and leave the healthy tissue alone. This procedure requires smaller incisions and offers a quick recovery.
  • Total: When arthritis or injury damages all three knee joint compartments, your best option may be a total knee replacement. Surgeons replace all areas of the knee joint, so you can get long-term pain relief.

Other Knee Pain Treatments

Additional treatments for knee pain we offer include:

Pain Management

Your personalized care plan may include injections of steroids or other pain medications. Steroids help relieve pain from inflammation within the joint. Other injections may consist of substances that lubricate the joint so that the moving parts glide smoothly. We may also recommend gentle exercise to ease stiffness and prevent symptoms from worsening. Learn about other nonsurgical orthopedic treatments.

Physical Therapy

Certified physical therapists use a variety of techniques to relieve pain and stiffness. We guide you through gentle stretches that loosen tight bands of tissue. Sessions may also include strengthening exercises. We can help you get stronger and healthier, even if you have never exercised.

Knee stiffness raises your fall risk. Physical therapists show you techniques and simple tools that help keep you safe while you go about your day. We also teach you how to identify and avoid fall risks. Get more information about physical therapy.

Sports Injury Care

Trinity Health Michigan offers specialized care for athletes and active people. Our team includes sports medicine physicians who tailor therapies to get you back in the game safely and without pain. You have access to specialized physical therapy assessments, advanced treatments and sports performance services. Find out more about how we treat sports injuries.

Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy

When surgery is necessary, we offer minimally invasive techniques like arthroscopy that are gentler on your body. Arthroscopy involves small incisions. The surgeon passes a narrow tube (arthroscope) through one of them. A light and camera at the tip enable us to view inside the knee joint. The surgeon inserts instruments through another incision. Arthroscopy allows us to carry out procedures that previously required large incisions.

We also deliver high-quality traditional open surgery (with longer incisions). Our patient-centered approach helps you feel prepared and cared for every step of the way. Read more about orthopedic surgery and arthroscopy.

Knee Conditions We Treat

Common sources of knee pain we treat include:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture: Sudden movement that tears a thick band of tissue connecting the thigh bone to the shin bone
  • Patella dislocation: Kneecap slides out of its natural position
  • Hamstring injury: Strain or tear in a group of muscles in the back of the thigh
  • Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome: Connective tissue that runs down the side of the upper leg tightens, causing inflammation and friction at the knee
  • Jumper’s knee (patellar tendonitis): Tendon pain in the lower knee due to activities that require frequent jumping
  • Knee arthritis: Long-lasting inflammation that wears away cartilage that lines the joint
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tear: Injury to a band of tissue in the back of the knee that connects the upper and lower leg bones
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome): Dull knee pain that has many causes, including overuse, foot issues and trauma
  • Torn meniscus: Common injury that occurs when sudden movement tears a band of cartilage that cushions the knee joint
