Transitional Year

Residency Program in Grand Rapids

Welcome from the Program Director

We appreciate your interest in the Transitional Year program at Trinity Health Grand Rapids. We have created a program that will allow residents to obtain a broad-based educational experience to prepare them for future specialty training.

Our program focuses on allowing TY residents to integrate as seamlessly as possible into a variety of learning teams and environments. We strive to develop a professional, collegial environment and are looking for residents to do the same. Our faculty and staff want to help you learn to achieve the best outcomes for your patients.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids serves a region of over 1 million people, with a group of over 500 multi-specialty providers. The hospital has decades of dedication to teaching medical learners of all types. The hospital also has a long history of dedicating resources to underserved populations. Grand Rapids is the second-largest city in Michigan – it is a safe, affordable and engaging community. Grand Rapidians are known for their interest in the arts, outdoors activities and great food. We are fortunate to live and work in this beautiful city.

We realize that each resident will have different goals for their educational experience and want to help residents get the most out of their time during a transitional year. We want to help you prepare for success in your career in medicine and look forward to hearing from you.

Program Overview

THGR has been training residents for over 60 years in a wide variety of settings. The Transitional Year is an integral part in preparing for a successful career in medicine. Trinity Health Grand Rapids/Michigan State University Transitional Year Residency Program has the institutional support and experience in graduate medical education to provide trainees with the broad-based training needed for a Transitional Year program.

Our program has an excellent relationship with other training programs and attendings in the hospital and surrounding area, allowing for smooth integration into educational teams. We are committed to preparing residents for further training in specialties, such as anesthesia, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, radiology, or careers in public health or the armed services.

We are ACGME approved for six residents per year.

Our Mission

The mission of our program is to provide residents with a well-rounded, broad based medical training experience with a wide variety of patients and diagnoses to prepare them for advanced training specialties.

Our Program Aims

Our program focuses on clinical education with an emphasis on the bedside experience. Our program will give residents a hands-on training experience, allowing residents to be the primary responsible provider for patients and first contact with patients in most care environments. Our program intends to provide a wide variety of patients in terms of diagnoses and demographics.

We provide a supportive learning environment for residents, allowing them to achieve an educational experience without undue burnout or stress. Our residents will serve the community in care for all patient populations. Our program will prepare residents for their advanced training program, and the faculty will serve as role models for professional patient care.
