Residency Program in West Michigan

As an Internal Medicine resident at Trinity Health Muskegon, Graduate Medical Education, you can shape your education to fit the future lifestyle you plan to lead. Your practice is not limited to the “critically ill” but consists of preventing, diagnosing, and treating all disease processes in the adult population.

The Internal Medicine Residency offers:

  • A wide range of pathology
  • A hands-on residency
  • Preceptor model services with 1:1 teaching from attending physicians
  • A brand-new facility with 30 ICU beds, neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, and trauma services
  • The residency clinic provides clinical experiences in a primary care office setting. In the clinic, residents will learn various office procedures and how to manage patients in the office environment.
  • Fellowship opportunities – currently, we only offer a Geriatrics fellowship at our facility, but we have had residents from each graduating class that has gotten into the fellowships of their choice. We have placed residents in the following fellowships:
    • Pulmonary/Critical Care
    • Gastroenterology
    • Allergy/Immunology
    • Cardiology
    • Endocrinology

Other Programs

Trinity Health Muskegon, Graduate Medical Education boasts four other medical residency programs, Family, Emergency, OB and ONMM, a pharmacy residency, a Physician Assistant Fellowship, and a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. Our facility is a training site for two of the nursing schools in the community.

We ensure a high quality of educational experiences to our residents. Trinity Health Muskegon also houses one of the largest and busiest simulation labs in the state, offering the opportunity to train in procedural skills and case scenarios in a simulated environment.

Training

Residents will experience training from entry in the Emergency Room evaluation until the patient is recovered and discharged from the hospital. Occasionally residents follow these patients in their continuity clinic. We have a designated Teaching Service Unit managed by the Internal Medicine residents and house staff on service. This unit is covered 24/7 by house staff. The resident will have one-to-one education from attending physicians on all rotations and maybe the only resident on service when on subspecialty rotations, lending to direct instruction and advanced responsibility.

Trinity Health Muskegon Internal Medicine Residency outpatient clinic is designated to train the Internal Medicine residents in office-based medicine and provide high-value care to an underserved population in this community.
